Jan Arbogast

Jan Arbogast began her study of ceramics at Indiana University where she
learned a love of throwing on the wheel from Professor Hiroshi Seto of
Mashko, Japan. While at IU she also studied with the late Karl Martz, a
master of glazing techniques and glaze formulation. After graduating with a
Master’s Degree in Art Education, focusing on ceramics, she apprenticed with
Gloria Enguidanos, from whom she learned the practical aspects of running a
commercial pottery studio.
Since
1982, she has continued to work as a studio potter and teacher presenting
her work in galleries and at art fairs around the state, and at the annual
show and sale presented by the Local Clay Potter’s Guild.
Her own work pays
homage to the timeless ceramic traditions of the Far East, North Africa, and
ancient America while still coming uniquely from her. The forms of her pots
are elegant and her glazes joyful. In her teaching she aims to impart a deep
respect for the methods and tools of art and especially of the potter’s art.
